Women’s History Month | March ‘24

It’s March. March is Women’s History Month. In honor of women‘s history, I want to share the story of a female leader who has made an impact on my life: Dr Maxine Mimms. Dr Maxine Mimms is a lifetime educator who was a friend to both Dr Martin Luther King, Jr, and the iconic poet, author, and philosopher, Maya Angelou. Dr Mimms was born in Virginia, where she earned her BA. She then moved to Detroit, Michigan, where she worked as a social worker. She later earned a PhD in Education Administration from Union Graduate School in San Francisco, and then she and her husband relocated to Seattle, where her husband was offered a position at a university. Dr Mimms worked in public education and even had the gift to be the 4th grade teacher of Jimi Hendrix. Dr Mimms served on faculty at the Evergreen State College in Olympia and then founded the Tacoma campus of the college in 1982. Dr Mimms will turn 96 on March 4. Also in honor of Women’s History Month, I want to celebrate a group of women with whom I had the opportunity to do an interview recently. If you are interested in learning more about how Black women are moving through this moment, particularly in response to the resignation of Dr Claudine Gay from Harvard and the court case involving District Attorney, Fani Willis, please watch the video. If you are interested in the challenges facing diversity, equity, and inclusion work in the United States, please watch the video with friends new and old. Watch here: https://www.youtube.com/live/jlwOBbpEAK8?si=-7K9TEFwsl1ENFTy I will be on the road much of the month of March serving schools and colleges and non-profit organizations across the nation. I seek to bring hope and light into new spaces, as well as learn and grow as I engage a variety of voices. Thank you for being on the journey with me!
